This question comes up often enough that I’m going to go ahead and address it now. I travel with the smallest lightest kit I can get away with.
Revised June 2022.
My current kit consists of two systems. The first is a Leica M10R with 21mm, 35mm, 50mm and 75mm lenses. This Leica kit is small, lite and offers exceptional image quality.
The second is my new and improved Fujifilm kit. It is a Fujfilm GFX100s with 32-64mm and 100-200mm zoom GFX lenses.
I usually pack a Gitzo tripod, travel version if I’m flying otherwise full size, topped by a Kirk ball head.
High quality B+W XS pro UV filters live on all my lenses. It’s very easy to wipe sand, dirt, moisture and grit from these filter, they are tough and durable. I always have a circular polarizer with adapter rings to fit all my lenses. Add to this the ubiquitous spare batteries, microfiber cleaning cloths, blower, lens pens, memory cards, 13 inch Macbook Pro, iPad, iPhone, external hard drive, power adapters, cords, cables and power strip My camera straps are all by Peak Design.
I cart all this stuff around in a some combination of Think Tank Roller Derby, Think Tank Retrospective Backpack or Billingham shoulder bag. The tripod legs travel in my luggage with the rest of my stuff and my Leatherman with bit kit for repairing all the little things that can and do go wrong.
